Car Q&A with Cricketer, Geoff Miller
Q. We understand that you have not been disappointed by your new Velar. Why did you choose this particular model?
With the business I am in, which, under normal circumstances, involves travelling up and down the country for after dinner speaking event, comfortable driving is a must and the Range Rover Velar gives me exactly that. The Velar is a super motor car, and I would recommend it to anyone that is in the market
Q. How has it been for you to be away from sport and the cricket ground?
The last four months have been testing to say the least. As someone who needs competition and adrenaline, whether that comes from playing cricket, being involved in selection or speaking in front of a live audience, lockdown and self-isolation has been hard to tolerate.
Fortunately, I have a wonderful wife and naturally, I am spending much more time with her now.
Q. How have you been keeping busy during lockdown?
That’s easy to answer – with lots of DIY and gardening!
Q. Have you managed to drive your new car much yet?
Yes, before the lockdown was announced, I drove the car around quite a bit and I have to say, I am very impressed.
Q. With restrictions slowly easing, do you have any exciting road trips planned with the car?
I don’t have much planned yet as functions and events continue to be cancelled or postponed, although, for good reason.
Q. You travelled all around the world during your career. If you could choose one place for a road trip, where would it be and why?
When it is safe to do so, I would like to take a little break in Italy. I didn’t play a lot of cricket there, but I have heard so many exciting things about the country. And with the comfort of the car, I think it would be a great place for a road trip.
Q. Do you have an all-time favourite driving song, or do you prefer listening to the cricket on the radio?
That’s an interesting question! When I was still playing, as I drove to cricket grounds on match days, I would listen to ELO – Mr Blue Sky to get my ‘spirit’ going – and this still works for me today.
Q. Finally, would you say you are a good driver?
I never used to be, but I would say I am now. I’m quite relaxed and tolerant when driving these days.
I think of driving like eating a curry – it starts mild but then the spice builds up and it gets very hot, before coming back down again to something reasonable and tasty. With driving, you start slow after passing your test and as your confidence builds, so do some bad and irresponsible habits. And then as you get more experience, you become more sensible.
